While discussing a matter with my brother last night, one that actually had me freaking out for more than a few moments, he made a very wise statement, as he has a habit of doing. In his “don’t worry about it” advice, I replied regarding my responsibility and how I was going to have to live with this, basically. Fortunately, everything worked out, but his response was simply this:
“What you choose to rest on your conscience is up to you.”
In other words, carefully evaluate what is truly your responsibility. Accurately figure out how much you are responsible for. Then focus on working on the solution. People are blamed for what goes wrong, but they get credit for having done right. Regardless of the situation, take your role in the matter seriously and proactively and in the end, however it works out, it stands to reason, that more often than not, you’ll be able to say “I did everything I could” instead of “I wish I had done more.”.
